RDI Tax Assistance
If you don’t qualify for free tax preparation, we also offer low-cost tax prep right here at RDI. Call 406-454-5730 for more information. And remember, we have a tax expert on staff, all year round. If you’ve been contacted by the IRS and are unsure of where to go next, we can help.
Did you discover that you didn’t list all of your income on your tax return? Or did you forget to claim all of your tax credits? If you filed your tax return and realized that something needs to be added, updated, or corrected, you will need to file an amended tax return. However, if it’s BEFORE the tax deadline, you should go back to the place that prepared your taxes and have them complete an amended return for you. If it’s AFTER the tax deadline, please call our toll free number at 406-454-5730 to see if we can help.
Don’t want to wait in line and you have good computer skills and an email account? File your federal and state taxes yourself for FREE using MyFreeTaxes. This option is best suited for those taxpayers with $64,000 or less of income and simple tax returns who would normally buy off-the-shelf tax software.
MyFreeTaxes provides free federal and state tax preparation and filing assistance for qualifying individuals and families. It is the first online initiative allowing free federal and state tax prep and filing in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since 2009, MyFreeTaxes and our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites have helped millions of U.S. taxpayers save more than $10 billion.
RDI partners with the RSVP program to host a volunteer workstation at our tax sites. We work together in recruiting new volunteers, not just for tax preparation, but to volunteer in our community, in general. RSVP looks to connect volunteers to opportunities listed on its www.volunteergreatfalls.org website and its Connect Great Falls young professionals organization. Please call 727-3400 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Bridge to Benefits (B2B) is an online screening tool that is designed to help families and individuals understand if they are eligible for certain work support programs or tax credits. Thousands of eligible families are not participating in these programs or claiming the tax credits that could provide increased economic stability for their families. B2B strives to help families navigate complicated public program enrollment processes, assist service providers by forming a “network of support” to ensure families receive the help they need, and strengthen communities by bringing more federal and state dollars through the increased number of families who are participating in public programs and tax credits.
As a Partner of Save Your Refund, RDI encourages our clients to save at tax time. We incorporate the SaveYourRefund promotion into our work by educating clients about the opportunity and helping them enter the promotions to win weekly prizes and enter a contest for the grand prize. By splitting as little as $50 from a refund into another savings account, taxpayers can enter to win a $100 prize and enter a photo contest for a $10,000 grand prize. Think about what you would save for, then ask your tax preparer to split your refund for a chance to win.
As an organization that is looking to help people increase their financial security, RDI vets some of the most common prepaid debit cards and offers the best one based on our clients’ needs and out-of-pocket costs. We currently offer the US Bank Focus Card from Community Financial Resources. This is a reloadable no cost card that has the lowest and fewest amount of fees for use and reloading. The prepaid debit card is an excellent option for unbanked taxpayers who would like to have their tax refund directly deposited, or it can be used as a secondary savings account for taxpayers to split their refund for the Save Your Refund promotion.
If you received a letter from the IRS after the tax season and you need help deciphering their “tax language”, give us a call at 1-877-275-2227. We can help you determine if it’s a legitimate IRS correspondence or a scam, then assist you with an appropriate response. Many times a letter can be easily cleared up by providing the IRS additional information or by preparing an amended tax return. If a dispute comes up, we may refer you to the LITC for legal representation.
If you have an income tax dispute with the IRS, then the LITC is where you should call. If you qualify, LITC may be able to give you legal advice or represent you with items such as: taxes due, audits or examinations, deficiency notices, liens and levies for past taxes due, negotiations and/or settlements of tax debts, Innocent and Injured Spouse claims, and Earned Income Tax Credit appeals. Apply online or by calling the Helpline at 1-800-666-6899.
